Own your space.

Words by Sazi Ndwandwa.

Somehow we live life as though it is a contest, the prize being the privilege of occupying space in conversations, demands on our time and our respect.

We idolise those we perceive as more accomplished. To the point of being apologetic for being in their presence. We cringe back when they are around. We freeze our mental faculties and suspend our personalities and opinions.

We take the place of servant and lackey. We mistake this for respect. No, it is not. A person's gifts and accomplishments do not make us any less worthy of life, dignity and respect.

If anyone looks down on us and tries to dehumanise us by deifying themselves, they have some growing up to do. If we allow them to do that, we have some growing up to do.

You have a right to be here.

You have a right to be you.

If anything, it might very well be your obligation to be and to do. People raised you, loved you, nurtured you. For the efforts you yourself have put into yourself.

You have an obligation to the world to show us you. The best version of you, talents developed and dreams pursued relentlessly. You owe that to yourself, to find and fulfil the purpose intended for you by your deity.

You have a right to own your space and to exist as an equal amongst gods.
